The Spanish director, who will make his English-language feature debut with the upcoming ‘The Room Next Door,’ will be honored with the Donostia Award for his contributions to cinema.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Spanish directing legend Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/a> will be honored with the Donostia Award for \u201cextraordinary contributions to cinema\u201d at this year\u2019s San Sebastian Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almod\u00f3var is intimately tied to San Sebastian, having premiered his sophomore feature Pepi, Luci, Bom <\/em>there in 1980. He returned in 1982 with Labyrinth of Passions<\/em>, his first collaboration with actor Antonio Banderas and cinematographer \u00c1ngel Luis Fernandez and the film that made him a talent to watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He would go on to celebrate international<\/a> success with Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown <\/em>(1988), which swept Spain\u2019s Goya Awards and secured the director his first Oscar nomination; All About My Mother <\/em>(1999), which won the Academy Award for best foreign-language film; and Talk to Her <\/em>(2002), which was nominated for two Oscars and won Almod\u00f3var the best original screenplay honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to his many collaborations with Banderas<\/a>, Almod\u00f3var is closely associated with Spanish star Pen\u00e9lope Cruz, who worked with him on such features as Volver<\/em> (2006), Pain and Glory<\/a><\/em> (2019), which also starred Banderas, and Parallel Mothers <\/a><\/em>(2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pioneer of LGBTIQ+ storytelling, Almod\u00f3var is also acclaimed for his distinct visual style and candy-colored imagery. His Madrid-based production company, El Deseo, founded with his brother Agust\u00edn in 1986, has been a leading force in supporting emerging Spanish talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy career began in San Sebastian in the year 1980 and since then I have returned to the festival often, with or without a film. And I have always immensely enjoyed myself,\u201d the filmmaker said. \u201cSan Sebastian is one of the cities where the cinema is celebrated with enormous enthusiasm. More than ever, at these times, we need the complicity of the spectators, and their presence in the film theatres. It is a dream to attend a festival like this, where the cinemas are always full.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almod\u00f3var will receive the Donostia Award in San Sebastian on Sept. 26 from Tilda Swinton, ahead of the screening of The Room Next Door<\/a><\/em>, the director\u2019s English-language debut, with stars Swinton and Julianne Moore. The film premieres at the Venice Film Festival next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
