Apple TV’s breakout hit Slow Horses has just shared a big season 7 update, with a host of new actors set to join the cast – including Doctor Who‘s Varada Sethu and The Gold‘s Joshua McGuire.
The pair have been announced along with a number of other stars, including Ethan Moorhouse (Ludwig, MobLand), Tuppence Middleton (The Forsytes, Downton Abbey: A New Era), and Merab Ninidze (McMafia, Homeland).
While character details are yet to be revealed, Ninidze did make a small appearance in the current sixth season, voicing Vassily Rasnokov. It’s also been revealed that James Callis will return as Claude Whelan.
The award-winning spy show, starring Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, centres on the dysfunctional and somewhat inept team of banished British intelligence agents who work in Slough House. The main cast also features Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, and Kristin Scott Thomas.
When season seven was first officially confirmed, a logline teased that Lamb and his team would be “on the hunt to find and neutralise a mole at the heart of British Government before they can bring down the state”.
The hit show is based on Mick Herron’s Slough House book series, and the seventh season is set to be adapted from the Bad Actors novel. Centred on the character Claude Whelan, the plot for the book (via Amazon) sees the official tasked with tracking down a key member of a government think-tank who has disappeared without a trace.
“The trail leads straight back to Regent’s Park HQ itself, with its chief, Diana Taverner, as prime suspect,” the novel’s description continues. “Meanwhile her Russian counterpart has unexpectedly shown up in London but has slipped under MI5’s radar.”
Slow Horses is currently airing its sixth season, which Digital Spy branded the show’s darkest one yet in its four-star review.
“As ever the show is at its best when Gary Oldman is on screen, especially when he shares a scene with Kristin Scott Thomasor Saskia Reeves,” we wrote.
“While there are still a few of Mick Herron’s Slough House novels and novellas to adapt for TV (and a seventh season of Slow Horses already filming), may we suggest a follow up series of the three of them in character bickering and reminiscing about the good old days of spying? It would surely be the sharpest show of the year.”
The season-six finale, titled ‘Judgment Day’, will be released on Apple TV on 21 October.
