The sets are being auctioned and the word from Paramount is quiet, but two of the stars of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds want it known that they’re up for more if there is more to do. Even before the fifth and final season wrapped production last year, the showrunners started hyping their idea for a follow-up series. Their pitch to Paramount is a show titled Star Trek: Year One, set on the USS Enterprise during the first year of command for Captain James T. Kirk, who is played by Paul Wesley on Strange New Worlds. There has been no word on if Paramount is interested in this follow-up series, but Wesley recently talked about the possibility.
Ready to return as Kirk and Spock
Paul Wesley told a convention crowd in Indianapolis that he and Ethan Peck (Spock) have talked about extending their characters past Season 5 of the Strange New Worlds – which as of now is the last we know we’ll see their Kirk and Spock, respectively. “We always talk about how we’d love to do a spin-off, and if they, if we get the phone call, we’ll do it,” Wesley told the crowd, according to Collider. “But we haven’t got the phone call yet.” This picks up on what Wesley told TrekMovie last month about the potential follow-up show, when he said he and the rest of the cast would be “thrilled to do it.” But it appears the follow-up show remains a hypothetical hope more than something being actively developed.
Kirk and Spock are destined for an iconic friendship, but towards the end of Season 3 we had just begun to see the first moments of their chemistry form. Wesley’s Kirk has become more prominent in Strange New Worlds since being introduced in the season one finale. While he officially remains a guest star, he is featured in the brand new season four poster, released yesterday, which leans into how the series is heading towards the time of Star Trek: The Original Series, with the tagline “Boldly go one step closer to where it all began.”
And in the In the trailer for Season 4, the writers winked at the audience with Kirk’s line: “Don’t worry, Spock, I’m sure some day you’ll get to aim that logical brain of yours at some lucky captain.”
While still a ways off, we know in the series finale we will see Thomas Jane play Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami play Hikaru Sulu. Their casting would presumably bring their characters into “Year One,” along with other familiar faces from TOS including Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Scotty (Martin Quinn), Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), and possibly others.
